Family carers and individuals with learning disabilities play a vital role in the whole process of getting services for children and adults.  The processes for children and adults are different and both can be quite complicated.  However it is essential for families and individuals to know how the process works.

•  Try to find out as much as possible about your own and your family member's essential roles in being properly assessed and accessing services.
• Other parents are an excellent source of support and information.
• Be prepared to stand up for yourself and for the person you care for.  Sometimes you might have to fight hard for your family member's needs and choices.
• If you need to consult a solicitor it is essential to choose a specialist.  A list of specialists can be provided by the Parents Federation office.
• Look after your own interests as a carer.  You might be able to access separate funding and other services and entitlements for yourself as a carer to help you in your caring role.
